The Madison River is slowly starting to come back into shape. The fishing will steadily get better as the week goes on with the falling water levels. Nymph fishing is still your best bet for catching fish with streamers and pats rubber legs being the most productive. Some fish have started to eat dries around the town area (mostly caddis) we still haven't seen any salmon flies yet but I would expect they will make their appearance very soon. The river as a whole will start to fish well wi...

The past few days the river has been dropping and slightly improving on clarity. The fish have enjoyed their slight break from the runoff bump and have started to feed again. With the warmer temperatures in the forecast we will be expecting another bump in the near future. Anglers brave enough to fish the muddy water have enjoyed scattered suggest through out the upper river. The best clarity is still above the west fork and is still your best bet for fishing. Steamers and pats rubbers legs f...

The continued spring like weather brings great fishing to the Madison River. The fish are happy and the water is cold so it is a good time to be a fisherman in Montana. Nymphing will keep the rod bent most of the day. Standard spring fare of stone flies, worms, BWO nymphs and eggs will keep you into fish. More and more skwalas are showing up and fishing a single dry fly chubby all day is now an option. Good reports river wide of dry fly eats and good fishing all afternoon. Streamers a...

Fishing report for the Madison River Ennis Montana April 14th 2017. The river as a whole has been fishing fairly well. It is still mostly a nymphing game with worm and egg patterns still being the most productive. but the water temperatures have started to reach the high 40's through out the day. With the water temperature rising we are starting to see some bugs in the air. Look for Midges , Skwallas and Blue wings on cloudy days when the wind is low. Fish are still laying in there winter hi...

Well it has happened. We knew the 80 degree days would catch up with us eventually. It has. There is a significant strip at Lyons bridge from the West Fork. All of the other feeder streams are pumping mud at this point as well. Best bet right now is to get above the west fork. Think $3 Bridge and Reynolds Pass. This is your best option right now. Looks like cooler weather is headed our way and this will help. Typically the Madison does not get totally unfishable. If we get some m...

Fishing report for the Madison River Ennis Montana April 6th 2017. The Spring fishing is starting to warm up just like the weather. Be prepared for the mornings to be slow with the best fishing in the afternoons. The fish are still holding in the winter spots, look for slower deeper water. The nymphing game is still the most productive way to catch fish with Midges, skwallas, worms and eggs being the patterns to use. We have seen some fish coming up to eat midges if the wind doesn't blow the...

Spring like weather means spring like fishing on the Madison River. We have been seeing some good weather and the fish have responded. It is mostly a nymph game with the occasional dry fly opportunity. Worms, eggs, stone fly and midge stuff will keep you bent almost all day. The water is still cold and running at just over 1300 CFS at Varney. The best fishing has been in the afternoon. Every ramp is open river wide except Ennis. Just got word that the Ennis boat launch will stay clos...

With the spring weather the spring fishing is really improving. The river is in great shape but there is still ice on the banks and the Town Access and Valley Garden are closed but people have been walking in. Pallisades still has some snow drift issues but that will be cleared up shortly. The rest of the river is game on. We have been doing best with stone fly stuff as well as worms, eggs, and very large copper johns. The fish are still concentrated in the deeper slower water and nee...

Fishing on the Madison is just getting going. It all depends on mother nature this time of year. Is it going to be a spring like day or will old man winter reclaim the Madison? The river gorge has broken up but you will still find a bunch of ice along the banks from the Lake up to just below Varney Bridge. Town access and valley garden are still closed with no opening in sight. In fact the ice has all but covered both of these access. It is going to be a while and take some really warm ...
