Booking and Cancellation Policies
A required, non-refundable $250 deposit will be charged to your credit card at the time of booking. Your credit card will be used to complete the transaction, and the remaining balance will be due the day of your trip. Cost per trip, package or fly fishing instruction is the same amount for one or two anglers, unless specified as cost per angler. All trips booked within 14 days of the scheduled trip require full payment at time of booking.
Cancellations more than 30 days prior to the first day of your trip will relieve you of any obligation to pay the remaining amount, and your trip will be canceled. Cancellations within 30 days of the first day of your trip are non-refundable. At the discretion of The Tackle Shop and in extreme circumstances, your payment may result in the application of a rescheduled day(s) or refund of all or part of the amount. We fish in all weather and only cancel for unsafe circumstances.
Tips and Gratuities
Trip prices do not include tips or gratuities. Our guides and instructors work hard to provide excellent service, and tips are appreciated.
Suggested Equipment and Packing List
The Tackle Shop recommends the following equipment and items, which you may bring yourself or purchase at the shop. If you wish to purchase new tackle for your trip, we recommend calling prior to your arrival so we can have it ready when you arrive. Terminal tackle such as flies, floatant, leaders, etc., should be purchased once you arrive in order to make sure you have the most current local choices.
Recommended Equipment and Items:
- 8’6″ to 9’6″ fly rod in either a 5, 6, or 7 weight with floating weight forward line
- Layered clothing (cool mornings and evenings, warm afternoons)
- Rain gear and jacket (a must no matter what time of year)
- Hat with a brim (either full coverage or a ball cap with a significant brim)
- Multifunctional headwear for sun and wind protection
- Lightweight breathable waders if fishing in spring or fall
- Boat shoes or sandals you do not mind getting wet (wet wading in summer)
- Polarized sunglasses (these are super important)
- Eyeglasses retainer
- Sunscreen and lip balm (the sun can be very strong)
- Camera
- Montana fishing license: You can purchase your license at The Tackle Shop or online before you arrive at Online Licenses Service. If you prefer to purchase your license at the shop, you’ll need your Social Security number and driver’s license (or another photo ID). Montana Fish and Game requires a SSN and a driver’s license or photo ID for anyone purchasing a fishing license.
If you have specific equipment and fly rod questions, please contact us at 406-682-4263 and our experienced staff will be glad to answer any questions to help make your fishing adventure memorable.
Frequently Asked Questions:
HOW LONG ARE YOUR TRIPS?
Generally our full day trips are 8 hours on the water with half day trips about 4 hours on the water. We are extremely flexible and our stock in trade is working with your schedule.
WHAT RIVERS DO YOU FISH?
Out of our fly shop The Tackle Shop, we routinely fish the Blue Ribbon Madison River, Jefferson, Yellowstone, Big Hole, Ruby and Beaverhead. We also love to travel and have bases of operation on the Missouri, Blackfoot, Bitterroot and Clark Fork Rivers.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR TRIPS?
We can take care of everything. On any of our guided trips we provide all the rods, reels, waders, boots, tackle and flies. If you have your own gear bring it along but if you traveled with nothing we can set you up.
I WOULD LIKE A CASTING LESSON PRIOR TO THE TRIP, IS THIS POSSIBLE?
Yes Absolutely! We do Free casting and fishing lessons called Fly Fishing 101 each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at the store. We can also arrange a private lesson for your group.
I HAVE NEVER FLY FISHED BEFORE IS THIS A PROBLEM?
No this is not a problem. We love instructing and helping beginners learn the basics of fly fishing in a fun environment. All of our guides are Orvis Endorsed and are trained to teach beginners not only how to cast but fly fish.
WHAT IS PROVIDED?
We provide all the gear needed for your trip. This includes Rods, Reels, terminal tackle, waders, boots, fly’s and rain gear. If you have your own equipment please bring it along but if you’r new to the sport or do not want to travel with your gear we can get you out on the water with everything you may need. We also provide hardy stream side lunches and drinks on all full day trips. On half day trips we provide snacks and drinks.
IN OUR GROUP WE HAVE A NON FISHERMAN THAT WANTS TO GO ALONG. IS THIS OK?
Yes. They can go along on the trip and have a great day in nature while being a big part of your trip.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I TIP?
We get asked this a bunch. Our guides work extremely hard each and every day and gratuities are very much appreciated. What I routinely tell folks is you should tip the same percentage as if you had a meal in a restaurant that exceeded your expectations.
HOW FAR IS THE STORE FROM YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK?
We are approximately one hour from the west gate of Yellowstone at West Yellowstone Montana. We routinely have guests that combine a family Yellowstone vacation with a day of fishing.
