Right now the Madison River at Varney Bridge is 1920 CFS and at Kirby it is 1490CFS. These flows are almost perfect. The river is that happy shade of bugger green everyone is looking for just in time for the weekend. This will not last so get after it while it lasts. The first few days of 70’s and we are off to the races again with real runoff. We have a little window here just in time for the long weekend.
We are seeing the entire river fish well right now with standard spring stuff sub surface. Turds, worms, eggs, princes and the like have been keeping us bent. On the cooler days the BWO show up along with the March Browns near Ennis. If you get the right afternoon and the right spot you could see some impressive dry fly fishing. Keep those Parachute Adams and Purple Haze handy just in case.
Streamer guys are getting it done with all sorts of fuzzy muppets, mammals, rodents and ducklings. The big articulated stuff from the guy up river right down to the skinny zonker patterns are getting the love. Keep them near the bank and on a stiff tippet.
Stop in the store this Holiday Weekend for some great savings on cool gear. Remember the reason for the long weekend. We appreciate those that gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can go fishing.
