March 6 Fishing Report

How is Summer Looking

Right now we are sitting at about 85% of average snow pack in place in the Madison River Basin.  Yes this could be better but just two weeks ago it was a lot worse.  We have more snow on the way and the best producing months for mountain snow is ahead of us.  Also Hebgan Lake is only 4.5 feet from full pool.  This is huge as last year this time we were about 12 feet.  This is a huge kudos to the water managers at Northwestern Energy.  They did us right this time.  A few more big storms and a wet to normal spring and we should be in good shape.  Other rivers that do not have a dam to store water will be in tough shape.  So plan on seeing the Big Hole and Yellowstone crowd play in our sandbox some this summer.

What is Fishing Now

If your looking to get out and fish now you are in luck.  Most of the river is open to wade fisherman. The photo is from Burnt tree hole.  Eight Mile, Burnt tree, Ennis town and. Valley garden were all jammed up with the gorge this winter and are a no go for launching or getting boats out.  All of these except Town and Valley are good for the wade guys.  All the other access sites should be good to go. Watch out for drifts going into Pallisades and Lyons.  We have our first guided float trips next week and feel they should be a go.

Those wanting to fish now think low and slow.  The fish are in the deeper holes and are cold.  Ice is still on the banks and will be there for a while.  We have been having the best luck with midge larva nymph like zebras.  Good midge hatches mid afternoon on overcast warm days.  Look for a few risers in the slicks and slower spots. Also give the other winter flies a good turn.  Worms in pink, stone fly stuff and tiny and shiny stuff.  Very soon some rainbows will start to spawn and when that happens the egg bite will be on. We like pink eggs in the spring. Remember pink is the color of sping.  Also, if you see spawning fish please move along and give them space and do not walk on redds.  This is our future .

Very soon fishing will pick up in a big way.  Real spring is right around the corner and the season will be off and running. Start you season with a new line or waders. It will make you feel good. Remember if you look good you feel good and you fish good.
