Winter in the Madison Valley is a fickle thing for the fly fisher. One week there is great weather and the fish are up eating midges ever afternoon and the next week it is 30 below zero. We have seen both in the last while. It looks like for the upcoming week or so we will at least have some fishable days.
If you get one of these days when the weather is good and there is little wind think midges. Those tiny and shiny nymphs will keep you bent all afternoon. Trail them behind a girdle bug or other stone fly attractor and you should be good to go.
The river gourged from Ennis Lake to just upstream of town. Valley Garden and the Ennis Town Access are both closed for the foreseeable future. These should be closed from now till say May 15 or when the snow and ice melt enough that FWP can get in and fix the road ways. This may mess up our upcoming spring fishing and take this great section off the table for early spring. If you get out this week think below the dam or above Lyons Bridge.
There are lots of good things happening shortly. We should see more stable weather and better fishing in the short order. Lets keep praying for snow in the mountains. Right now we are at about 90% and are going into the best time for mountain snow. More water makes happy fish. Happy fish make happy fisherman.
