Fishing Report for the Madison River in Montana 7-19-2016

Fishing continues to hold in there even with the big change from snow a week or so ago to heat now. Nocturnal stones have made an appearance along with tons of caddis, a solid may fly hatch mid morning and still some yellow sallies bumping around. All in all it is fishing well. The bobber lobbers are still king on numbers especially if you count all the whitefish. There feels like there are more whitefish in the river then ever. Drop any bead head over side of boat haul in whitefish. Easy as that. The nymph men are doing best with prince variants as well as san juans. I think the weed beds that formed when the river was lover has attracted more aquatic worms. Try a small red san juan and you will be surprised. The dry fly guys are fishing smaller chubbies as well as tons of may fly imitations and even some ants. Mostly purple. Again purple is king of the dry fly. Royal is a close second. Not many throwing streamers now that the water has come down. Keep thinking about it as shortly the small trout and whitefish babies will be prey for the larger fish. Sometime mid summer the fish get carniviourous and start eating their own. Stay tuned it is coming. Lots of good water and summer flows to be had. Best fishing on super hot sunny days is from daylight till about 2 then again starting at 6 till dark. Caddis madness each and every evening.
