Salmon Fly Madness on the Madison River

The Big Bugs have Arrived

If you are around now get after it. The salmon flies are on the river.  We are seeing them up to about McAtee Bridge and they will move up from there.  We are thinking by tomorrow night they will be to Ruby.

What to fish

If your chasing the big bugs we like low riding salmon fly in smaller sizes. We like size 10-8 in chubby or other foamy creations.  The real action right now is on the caddis like normal.  We have been fishing a salmon fly with a caddis trailer. Try the All season caddis along with the X caddis. There are tons of caddis and only a handful of the big bugs.  When you go out to eat you eat one steak but 50 green beans. Be the green bean.  The fish are not tippet shy as of now so 2X will get them.

How long will the Madness Continue

The salmon flies will be around for another week to 10 days. But , the fish will continue to look for them for another two weeks or more. Stay true to the big bug and you will be rewarded.  The river is dropping and clearing fast.  The fish are moving out from the banks to the summer spots.  Fish the middle for less pressured fish.

It is all happening right now so if you have vacation saved now is the time to go.
