August is here and the Fly fishing is still really good on the Madison River. Not sure if it is the amount of snow we had this winter leading to more water in the river or the fact that the dam is finally fixed and drawing cold water from the bottom of the lake but the fishing has been out of sight for August. The Madison River is a dry fly fishermans paradise right now. Hoppers, ants, caddis, moths and attractors are getting it done river wide. We can not remember when the dry fly fishing has been this good this late. It is really an August to remember. Keep in mind that the fish are getting wiser and the 2X to the dry just will not cut it any more. We have been throwing 4x and the really crazy have been doing the 5X game. Yes 5X might get more strikes but most times you can not hold them in the current and need a little luck. If Mr. Murphy shows up and he usually does that fish now has jewelry.
We have been liking smaller chubbies, water walkers, and other floating hopper patterns with some floating trailer. Ants, moths, and caddis are the favorites.
Its really good out there right now despite the heat and as long as we maintain more normal temps we will keep the good fishing.
Dont forget the Ennis on the Madison Fly Fishing Festival Labor Day weekend. It is going to be a blast with speakers, music, booths, food, and fun for the entire family.
