Fishing Report Upper Madison River 5-13-2016

The cooler weather and even the snow event have helped the Madison River. It locked the snow in the higher elevations and cleaned up the river. Right now the entire Upper Madison River is completely fishable. The water has about 1-1.5 feet of clarity at the Ennis Town Access. Reports from just yesterday are good. Remember there is still a bunch of water in the Madison River and it is running around 2000CFS at Varney. While not historically high it makes the floating require a little more concentration. Also the fish require a good drift in the correct spot. They will not move in the bigger water. We have been finding them near the bank in all the slower pockets.

Nymphing and streamer fishing is the name of the game in the bigger water. Big dark bodied rubber leg stuff has been the winner as well as the pink and red san juan. Get them in the spots and down and you will get a wiggle.

If your wade fishing the best is still the Reynolds Pass all the way to West Fork. Reports are great. Concentrate on the slower water behind rocks, around islands and along the bank. On cloudy days remember the BWO are still around as the fish are keying on the smaller techy may fly stuff.
