Fishing Report for the Madison River in Montana 3/6/2017

Fishing on the Madison is just getting going. It all depends on mother nature this time of year. Is it going to be a spring like day or will old man winter reclaim the Madison? The river gorge has broken up but you will still find a bunch of ice along the banks from the Lake up to just below Varney Bridge. Town access and valley garden are still closed with no opening in sight. In fact the ice has all but covered both of these access. It is going to be a while and take some really warm temps to get these two open. Think May. If your heading out we have been having the best luck throwing egg patterns. Fish the old Crystal Meth. I know it is not a very pretty "fly" but it sure gets it done this time of year. We have also been doing well with stone fly stuff, midge and worms of various configurations. The biggest key is getting it down deep and finding the soft water. If you do you will catch a bunch of fish. We have been hearing rumor and seeing some social posts of midge eating fish. Yes you can find them more so up river. Think $3 Bridge and Lyons area. Look for days when the wind is not nuclear and the temps are over 35. I know not many of these days this winter.
