Caddis Everywhere!
Caddis, Caddis everywhere. The famed Mothers Day Caddis hatch has started on the Madison River. The lower river below the Bear Trap Canyon is covered up in dry fly fishing and the Upper River above Ennis is just starting. Think Tuesday of next week if your looking or some really good dry fly fishing.
If your fishing this weekend during the storm think nymphing stone flies and caddis larva. Plenty of both in the soup right now and the fish should be looking for them. The cooler weather will slow down the hatch but the fish will still be hungry. I would even throw some streamers this weekend as the water is warm enough to have the fish thinking big bites. I would keep the big stuff slow. You might only get a few fish a day doing this but they will be big and healthy.
If your fishing starting say Tuesday start fishing emergers about mid day. Soft hackle stuff and the famous CDC prince will take fish. These caddis move in the water column when they emerge so do not be afraid to swing it or lift it. Some really aggressive strikes.
We will continue to see increasing flows along with the warmer weather next week. Sooner or later this will blow out but for now we are good to go. Get out and fish.
