Fishing Report for the Madison River 3/20/24

Fish are Hungry

The fish in the Madison River are hungry right now.  They are waking up from the winter snooze and want to put on a few ponds. Our guides have been running trips this week and everyone is catching plenty of fish.   This is why spring is our favorite time to fish the Madison.  These fish are eating everything.  Eggs, worms, midges, stone fly nymphs.   Just get them in front of their face and game on.

Rainbow Spawning

The rainbows have started the spring spawning dance and we are starting to see redds on the gravel .   Keep an eye out for these and if you see them please leave them alone. It is not cool to be fishing over or below redds.  Also keep an eye out where your walking or putting down anchor.  This is our next generation of fish in the making so lets give them a little space. There are lots of places to fish please stay away from spawning fish.

Nymph Fishing is King

It is time to embrace the bobber for now.  The fish are mostly eating sub surface and if you want to be hooked up embrace the bobber lobber life.  We have been finding them on the shelf in the deep green water.  Put on some split shot and get them down.  We have been making due with 2X and 3X for tippet size.  Adjust your bobber so that the flies are right off the bottom. Remember the bobber should be 1.5X the water depth from the flies. This is just a rule of thumb.

We have been liking small pink or flesh colored egg patterns, wire worms, and tiny and shiny midge nymphs.  The more sun the more they are on the midge. The more clouds the more on the egg and worm.

The Weather is Changing

The late spring like weather we have been seeing is going away. We are expecting a storm this weekend into next week.  Yes it might put the fishing off for a while but we really need the snow.  Lets all do the snow dance right now and hope for a big dump in the mountains.  The fishing will be back in shape shortly.
