Fishing Report Upper Madison River 2-29-2016

With the constant stream of El Nino fueled weather we have been seeing the fishing has got really good. The river is in good shape the entire length with just some shelf ice below Valley Garden the reminders of the gorge this winter. Most guys are still doing best with sub surface nymph rigs. Eggs, worms and rubber leg’s are the name of the game right now. Keep them down in the fishes face with some lead and your sure to get bent. In fact the fishing has gotten significantly better over the last few weeks. The fish are still in the slower deeper water so concentrate on these areas. We have even been having reports of the first batch of lake run fish up from Ennis Lake.
A few of our guys have been throwing streamers with limited success. They have been getting less fish but the fish they do get are worth it in size. If your committed to throwing junk keep it slow and deep and you might just be rewarded with a great early spring fish.
The dry fly bite has been off and on. Days with no wind you can find a few risers to midges but when the wind kicks up they are blown away. If you find the magic combination of no wind and a warm day be ready for a few heads in the slower slicks and inside bends.
