Well, we are mid way through September and the Madison Valley is starting to get that fall feeling. Mornings are starting to get a little colder, jackets are staying on longer and the fisherman are hanging out at the local cafe later drinking coffee. What a great time to be on the upper Madison River. The trees and brown trout seem to mirror each other in their gold color change. With these changes, it’s time to change fishing tactics. Nymphs and streamers will become a big part of the game while the dry fly fishing will start to become an afternoon endeavor. Blue wings and Caddis will become the staple for dry fly Anglers. Hopper dropper setups will work in the afternoon once the grasshoppers wake up and start clicking. Swinging streamers and soft hackles can be pretty productive when the dry fly bite is slow. Anglers should start looking for brown trout to start running out of the lakes making their way up river to produce the next generation of bug eaters. This is a great time to fish Valley Garden, In between The lakes or above Hebgen lake.
Before we know it we will start to see snow on distant peeks and the serenade of elk will be the soundtrack we listen to. Many in the know believe that this mid September time is the best time to be outside in Montana so get out and enjoy.
