Tackle Shop Newsletter 6-2-15

Dear Friends,

June is here and with that comes the busy summer season we all know and love. Most of you are getting done with school, getting the yard cleaned up, planning your summer trip to Montana. We have had our hands full with the busiest May we have seen. The fishing has been great with the lower than expected water.
We have been getting a bunch of calls recently asking about the state of the water especially in the Madison for the coming season. So, if your planning a trip to the Madison in Montana this summer keep a few things in mind. Yes, we did have lower snow pack than normal. A few things are in our favor. First, Hebgen Lake is almost full and is expect to be completely full shortly. This really helps as we will have a good supply of water for the river. Second the dam at Hebgen is expected to be finished this summer just in time for the August heat. This will help in that we will finally after 7 years get bottom release flows out of Hebgen Lake. These cooling flows will help keep the Madison cool when we need it. Third, May was an extremely rainy month. This is good in two respects. First, it helps fill the lake. Second, it recharges the aquifer, so that the water in the river stays in the river and not seeping into the ground. All in all the state of the Madison for this summer season is pretty darn good. We have a bunch of things working in our favor that our neighbor drainages do not. Will the fishing slow down in August? Maybe. Will we see some lower flows in the river?, Most likely. Is it still a good bet to fish the Madison this summer? Absolutely! The Madison is extremely resilient and fishes well even in the heat of summer.
If your planning a trip to fish with us this summer and have not booked your guides yet, give us a call soon. Our guide calendar is filling up really fast. If you want a specific date on a specific river give us a call and lets get you on the books.
The upcoming month of June can be one of the best fishing months there are. Great hatches of Salmon Fly’s, Golden’s, PMD, Caddis are just a few short weeks away. If your like to catch big fish on dry fly’s the end of June is your time.

If your like us winter, especially in Montana, is just to long. We crave the feel of a fly rod, sand in our toes, tropical heat and good company. For this reason we are hosting a trip to Belize with

El Pescador Lodge.

El Pescador Lodge, the 2013 Orvis International Lodge of the Year and a Forbes Traveler Top 10 Luxury Eco Resort is one of the few places in the world where you can catch Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Snook and Barracuda all in the same day. It is located on the futile flats of Ambergris Caye and one of the favorite destinations for discerning salt water anglers. It is also a darn nice place to stay even for the non-fisherman with amenities like 3 swimming pools, wifi, world class cuisine, bikes, kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling and diving all right on the property. El Pescador is the perfect first time salt destination as well as the perfect place for a couples vacation.

I will personally be escorting you and the 9 other anglers on this grand adventure as well as helping with all arrangements. Our friend and owner of El Pescador, Alli, has put together a great package below for our group.
7 nights / 6 days of guided fishing with a shared guide as well as all lodging, food, all Belizean drinks at the bar, transfers from Belize City, tax, and use of all amenities as well as 20% OFF any purchase of gear, clothing or anything Orvis with The Tackle to prepare for our trip. This entire custom package is only $3950per person. Keep in mind that this package is for fishing each day.  If you want a day off the rod to explore, snorkel, kayak or just lounge by the pool or for a non-fisherman that wants to come along, call us for a custom pricing.

We are only taking 9 lucky adventurers along with us and several spots are already spoken for. So, if your like me and remember the lingering cold of this last winter lets plan a tropical get a way with a bunch of giant fish thrown in. I will buy the first drink with an umbrella in it.

Salmon Fly Season

Salmon Fly time is almost here. For those of you who have been luck enough to catch this hatch in the past you know that there is no better time to land a trophy fish on a dry fly. Each year some time between the middle of June and the middle of July huge orange stone fly’s emerge from the river bed for their brief time as a winged insect. During this window the fish feed on the floating T-bones with reckless abandon. Many dedicated dry fly anglers try and hit the hatch perfect each year. If your interested in finding out what all the Salmon Fly fuss is about and maybe catch the fish of a lifetime in the process plan on being in Ennis this year. The lower than normal water conditions could make this year one of the best salmon fly’s seasons in recent memory. Normally the hatch starts around June 20 on the Madison and progresses upstream for several weeks.

At the Take Out:

Just over 4 full years ago we purchased The Tackle Shop. At the time we knew we were buying an opportunity that was once great but had been ignored and gone down hill for a couple of years. When we walked in we had one guide day on the books, no inventory ordered, one solid return employee, a month of strait rain, the largest snow pack in the last 50 years and no retail experience. Now, 4 years and 5 summer seasons later we are starting to see a hint of the luster that The Tackle Shop once was known for. It has been a wild, bumpy, and scary ride that we would not change for anything. We have made a lot of mistakes but we are starting to see results, mostly by attrition. We could not have gotten this far without the continued support of our friends, employees, guides and most of all you the great people who continually trust in us. This has been the biggest gamble of our lives and any success is directed only to you. Thanks for trusting in us and here is to the next 4 years, may the light of success shine on all of us. We are looking forward to seeing all of our old friends and new this summer. As always if there is anything we can help with please give us a call.

Good Fishing and God Bless,
