Montana Guides Christmas List with Guide Wes Peterson
Our Montana Fly fishing guides love their gear. With them being on the water over 120 days a year the obsession with good gear is part of their job. Most are just wrapping up their season and the thoughts are of what should be on the list to upgrade for next season. Christmas is the perfect time to pick out the items to fill holes and get ready for next year.
Our Montana Fly fishing guide Wes Peterson has been guiding in Montana for almost 20 years. Raising a family in Montana and guiding he is leading the life of many peoples dreams. He has perfected his gear from many years on the water. Watch below as he explains what is on his Christmas list and why he wants these items.
His big ticket item is the Orvis Helios F fly rod. Wes loves this rod because guests can feel the flex in the rod and know when it is loading. “it flat out helps guests cast better”. Everyone who fishes it loves this rod. Delivered at $1098 it is a commitment for a avid angler.
Secondly, Wes would love to pair this new rod with the Cheeky Burst Fly Reel. A great reel for the money. Only $289 for a fully sealed drag and super light. Wes loves the durability to this reel and the great customer service he gets from Cheeky.
Third, Wes would love to pair the Orvis Helios and Cheeky Reel with a new fly line. Wes loves the Scientific Anglers Anadro Indicator line. This line pairs perfectly with the Helios. The super heavy head turns over nymph rigs, streamers and large dry flies really well. Wes says ” In the Madison River wind this is the line to have. Perfect for short casts out of the drift boat”
Fourth, Wes needs to replace his old wading boots. He loves the Korkers Dark Horse Wading Boots. The two things he loves most about these boots are first the interchangable soles. Use felt for the Madison or studded rubber for the Beaverhead River. Just swap out the soles. Secondly, Wes loves the Boa lace system. “Super easy to get on and off and tightens up super tight”.
Lastly, Wes wants some Clic Magnifying Glasses. At only $44.95 these are inexpensive and work really well. Wes says ” As you get older tying size 20 flies on the tippet becomes more difficult. Put these around your neck and when you need them just click them together and you can see again”. In fact if you look at most of the older guides on our guide staff they all wear them. Almost a cult thing for guides and fisherman over 35 years old. If you do not need them yet good on you. Someday you will.
Watch the video below and see why Wes loves these items and why they should be on the list of any fly fisherman.
