Fishing Report for the Madison River in Montana 8-16-2019

Fishing on the Madison has been nothing short of excellent. Terrestrials are everywhere, we are even having a hard time keeping them out of the shop. Fishing a double dry setup has been the ticket as of late. Throwing a hopper with an ant behind it has been very successful with large fish willingly eating both. Throwing a caddis behind a hopper has also been working well. Our guides have not been running nymphs lately because the dry fly fishing has been too good; however, we are sure that th...

Terrestrial season is in full swing and it is a dandy. We are truly having one of the best hopper seasons we have had in years. Hoppers are an excellent source of late season protein, so don't be surprised if one of those elusive Madison river giants comes up for a swipe at your fly. Hoppers of any shape, color, and size seem to be working just fine. Ants are also a must have in the box. We are partial to the cinnamon/black combo, but purple has been working great too. Now is also the time of...

The Madison is firing on all cylinders right now. There are bugs in numbers on every stretch of the river and all the late rains have helped keep the river temperatures down. Fish are looking up throughout the entirety of the day; therefore, now is as good of time as any to fish a single dry. We are seeing some terrestrials and hoppers out and about with some larger fish sipping ants. Caddis of all colors are still the food of choice for most fish, throwing a darker colored micro chubby with ...

Fishing on the Madison River continues to be great. While the big orange bugs have started to fade out the fishing remains fantastic. The big question the past few weeks are the afternoon possum pounders of thunder storms. About 3 pm we have seen some real good ones. The forecast going forward looks a bunch drier and that might just be a good thing. While we appreciate the green of the valley this late in the summer we need a little heat to remind us what summer is really like. Going for...

The Woo’s and Woe’s of the salmonfly hatch are almost over as the big bugs make their way towards Lyons bridge. Although fish were caught, the salmonfly hatch left many disappointed as the bugs were sparse and spread out with more eats coming on caddis than any of the big bugs . The fishing around town has been excellent. PMD and Caddis hatches have been consistent with a good number of yellow sallies and golden stones fluttering around. Fish are starting to consistently eat dries through...

Salmon flies are here on the Madison River and the fish are starting to really take notice. We have seen the big bugs up above Varney all the way down to Ennis. It has been very sporatic this year with big bugs in only certain locations and miles in between. Not the blanket see them everywhere type of hatch. When you do find them the fish in the last day of so have been eager to rise. Standard salmon fly stuff of chubbies, water walkers, and other floating orange and black foamies are g...

Salmon flies are almost here and any day could be the day. We are thinking the full hatch will begin on the 25 or 26. We should have some good dry fly fishing shortly after that. The big bugs are about to join the party. The river is in great shape and flows are 1830 at Varney and 1180 at Kirby. The thing we need to keep watch of is the water temps. As soon as it hits say 54 we are game on. Caddis fishing in the evenings on dry has been great recently and will only get better as we m...

Summer is officially here and with it the fishing is really heating up. Water Flows have been consistent the last couple weeks and the water is staying cool. Big nymphs and streamers are still the name of the game right now as everyone awaits the long sought after salmonfly hatch. We predict the big bugs to start coming out around June 26th, but to be honest at this point it’s just a guessing game. At this time larger nymphs will start making their way towards the banks. This is a great tim...

The Madison River is still in remarkable shape for being the center of runoff. People are catching fish river wide if you play the right game. Current flows are 1710 at Kirby and 2540 at Cameron. All fishable. We will see if the current 70's weather throws more mud into the river. It is expected one more push of mud and big water. For the record no salmon flies yet. A call we have been getting at the store daily. Expect them in Ennis around the 24 of the month. If you want to ca...
