Fishing Report for the Madison River in Montana 9-28-2016

It is not hard to see why fall Fly fishing on the Madison River is such a great time. The water has cooled off significantly in fact, the best fishing has been after 11 am. Bankers hours fishing, beautiful scenery and big aggressive fish make fall wonderful. Streamers and nymphs have been the name of the game and some have still been throwing hoppers and having great days. The cooler weather last week sure help put the fish and foliage in fall mode. This short term return to summer has made them a little grumpy but this too will be short lived along with the warm weather. Streamers have been good especially on the dead drift. Zonkers, sculpins and white sparkle minnows followed by a tiny and shiny bead head has been money on larger fish. Keep throwing it and it will happen. Nymph guys are tossing rubber leggs and shiny bead behind bobbers and doing well. The whitefish bite has started for the fall big time so those looking for lots of tugs and no spots are staying bent. Dry fly guys are still trowing small hoppers with fat legs and the ever awesome purple haze. Some dry fly only guys are reporting some season record fish eating hoppers recently. It is a little late for hoppers traditionally but if your looking for a big fish on top they are still looking for a big floating chunk of meat.
