Fishing Report for the Madison River in Montana 4-14-2019

Things are heating up around Ennis on the Madison River and the fishing is getting better by the day. The long range forecast is for more spring like weather and that will only make the fishing better. Right now the Madison River is still in early spring mode with stone flies, worms, eggs, midges and just the start of BWO. The water temps are in the low 40"s by 2 pm on most days and the fish are starting to take notice. What we really need is a few days of warm to kick it off. The water temps are still low and a few days of warm sunshine will go a long way to spark the Madison Fish. Recently, they have been eating the stone fly much better than anything else. We have been having the best luck on a size 8-10 dark bodied Pats rubber leg. The skwala nymphs are kicking around and the fish have noticed them. Scale down the size of your stone fly and watch catch rates rise. The next on the menu is the BWO. We have been seeing good hatches of them in the $3 Bridge area as the water is a little warmer up there. Down near town only a few buzzing around. Remember it takes 3 to make a hatch. Not there yet around Ennis. Most likely in the next week. If your looking for a dry fly experience go to the $3 Bridge area around mid day. Streamer guys are getting a few. Keep them low and slow and near the bottom. With the bump in river temps expected in the next week we should see and increase in streamer activity.
