Fishing Report for the Madison River 4-22

Spring has Finally Arrive to the Madison?

While we are all tired of the never ending winter in the Madison River Valley there are a few good things.  First our lakes and rivers should have plenty of water all summer. Think August hopper and ant fishing.  It is going to be really good. Second, we should get a great hatch of fish this year setting us up for many years of good fishing.  Remember fish like water and we are getting some water.

Good Weather on the Horizon

Things are pretty good right now and fixing to get really good shortly.  We are looking at some moderating weather and that should turn the fish on.  We are getting some lake run rainbows showing up in the river and the egg bite is getting good.   Remember if you see actively spawning fish please let them be.  Nobody wants to be bothered when getting busy.

Nymphing still Darn Good

Nymphing with eggs and worms has been the best as of late.  A pink or orange soft egg , meth or sucker spawn has been the winner. As for worms half the guys are catching fish on red the other half pink.  Pick a color you trust and stick with it.  We have been throwing them on 2X about 6 ft behind the indicator. If you do not touch bottom every third cast add weight. Remember the water is still cold and the fish will not move to take a fly. It needs to be in their face.

Streamers?

Lots of folks asking about streamers.  Wait a little for better streamer fishing. The water in the Madison is still cold.  If you must fish the meat throw it low and slow.  As the water warms  in the next two weeks we will see some darn good streamer fishing.  Like coach Prime says We coming.

Mayflies Please

We have not seen any BWO mayflies as of yet.  We need the water too warm a little.  Look for them to start shortly.  When they do start throwing may fly looking nymphs.  PT’s and the like.  Again We coming.  Stay tuned.

Good fishing on the horizon with a little better weather.  I know we can all use a sunny day or two on the river to get rid of the winter crud.  Stop by the store or give a call for the most up to date info.
