Spring is the Thing
March has arrived and we are in an massive tug of war. On one side Old Man Winter and the other Mamma Spring. Some days winter wins but the following day spring is victorious. Mamma spring will get stronger and win more days as the month rolls along. We are currently sitting at 97% of average for snow pack. This is a great start and we are sitting good. We still have several more months of snow building left but as we sit today we are in good shape. Lets keep these we spring storms coming. Remember more snow in the mountains means more dry fly days especially come August.
Fishing Now
If you want to go fishing now it is more about picking your day. Try going on days where Mamma Spring wins. These will be above freezing and little or no wind. If you find that day it is actually fishing really well. Spring like fare of deep nymph fishing with midges, worms, eggs and stone flies will keep you bent. Remember the fish are in the deeper pools now. Find the deep slow stuff and you will catch fish. We have been fishing a leader of 6 feet from indicator to weight. Then two nymphs. Add weight if you are not getting down deep. The egg bite will only get better. Rainbows will start to spawn shortly and the soup will have lots of eggs in it. We like the smaller pink and orange this time of year. We are also rocking 2X as the lightest tippet.
Dry Fly?
If you find the magic day you will see some dry fly fishing. Look for warm days with no wind and overcast sky. These fish will be eating midges. Yes you can almost inhale your midge flies. A size 18 or 20 buzz ball or griffiths gnat will take all risers. Look for fish behind rocks and anywhere the water is slow slow slow. These are little flies so fish need slow almost pool like water to make the calorie equation work.
