Well spring has finally showed up in the Madison Valley and we could not be happier. Temps are forecast to be in the 70 this weekend. This will do a few things for us. First, it should warm the water enough to spark the March Browns , skwala, and hopefully the Mothers Day Caddis Hatch. Right now near town we are seeing March Browns and Blue Winged Olives. The second thing 70’s might do is spark some runoff. Two days of 70’s do it. There is already some brown water coming in from the West Fork. Expect this to continue if we get the big warm up. Will this blow out the river? Don’t think so. The Madison still will be having a bunch of water coming from the dam that is clean to balance out the brown. The thing we need to watch is Indian Creek and the other small creeks. If they start puking mud the game will change.
So if your going out for the weekend and want to catch a few fish I think your in luck. It might be the weekend to fish dry flies for the entire spring. March Browns, BWO and skwala will most certainly be around and popping mid afternoon. Mothers Day Caddis? Think it is still a few days out for the big hatches. We will see. Nymphing? Yup you will stay bent. Think stonefly, soft hackle may fly stuff, worms and eggs, Streamers? Been getting some with dead drift on cream colored streamers of late. Throw them and see.
Stop in the store for the latest and greatest bugs to match the hatch and follow the bobber this weekend.
Take your MOM fishing on Sunday. Better than flowers. Brunch next door at the new Restaurant then river time. A great plan for Mothers Day.
