The last week of August is upon us and boy what an august we have had. The upper Madison River here by Ennis has fish amazingly well. We have enjoyed what some have considered the best hopper season we have seen in years. The Madison river flow today was still about 1,200 cfs and the temperature has been ranging from the mid fifties to the mid sixties. The Madison Valley has been seeing some pretty cold nights as of late and there seems to be no hurry to get out at the crack of dawn. The fishing is still pretty consistent river wide we are seeing hoppers, ants, trico’s and some spruce moths still. With the cooler night time temps we have started to fish more nymphs and streamers in the morning instead of just going dry or die. Float anglers are enjoying success from Lyons bridge to Ennis and Wade Anglers have been having luck at Valley Garden (Just look out for the moose).
We have been liking smaller chubbies, water walkers, and other floating hopper patterns with a dropper we like cdc princes, small worms, micro may’s in the morning and ants and caddis in the afternoon.
Dont forget the Ennis on the Madison Fly Fishing Festival Labor Day weekend. It is going to be a blast with speakers, music, booths, food, and fun for the entire family.
