Spring Season in Full Swing
The Madison is fishing exceptionally well right now with hungry trout, cold water, and perfect weather making this spring truly special. Blue Wing Olive hatches are bringing fish to the surface daily.
asked in the fly shop every day. Are they here yet? The short answer is yes you can get some good salmon fly fishing on the Madison River. The bulk of the hatch has not gotten going as of yet. There are bugs scattered mostly lower river below varney. The fish are looking at the adults some what. Keep with it. You will find one. They are not rising in every run or every bank but if you stay with it right now it will produce. We like the smaller salmon flies. Small chubbies, Fools Gold and Bareback Rider will get you bent. Remember you floatant. We like the high test stuff like Fly Agra. This fishing will continue to get better. Stay tuned and it is all about to happen.

Like every year Caddis is king on the Madison River. The fish eat about 12 caddis for every big bug they eat. We like fishing caddis this time of year. We like the high floating variety like the small cinimmon chubby or the Jakes All Season Caddis. Both float well and fish like them. Fish the smaller bug on 4X behind the salmon fly and you will be happy happy happy.
Nymph and Streamer
If you are in it for numbers nymph and streamer fishing will get you there. The salmon fly nymphs are heading to the banks and this makes them easy food for fish. Rubber leggs, we like the olive color this time of year. Caddis nymphs and emergers like the Tung Dart, CDC Baby and Lime Juice will all take fish. Streamers will find some darn good big fish this time of year. Think olive sculpins. We like them and so do the fish. Like fishing the big dry keep at it and you will be rewarded.
