Fishing Report for the Madison River 7-14

Summer Fly Fishing

The meat of our summer is here and the Madison River is in great shape.  The current flow at Kirby is 1260 CFS and at Varney is 1380 CFS.   This is a great level for mid summer.  Boats can float anywhere, waders can wade and every fiy fisherman is happy.  Temps are starting to creep up but you would not notice with the fish.  We need to keep en eye on temps if we stay warm.  Most other rivers are on restrictions and we do not want that here.  The folks at the dam put a little more water in the river for us and this will help with the temps.

The fishing has been generally very good.  Dry fly fishing has been the norm and all fisherman are happy.  The bober lobbers are happy chasing balls and hooking fish.  Mostly white fish. The streamer guys are getting a few mostly in the morning and evening but the dry fly fishing as been second to none.

Dry Fly

The fishing has been really good.  Caddis, PMD mayflies, yellow sallies, the start of nocturnal stones and even some green drakes and ants.  Pick correctly and you will be rewarded.  The dry fly fishing has been a leasure sport as of late.  The fishing not getting good till at least 10 in the morning.  The clear cool nights are not holding heat and it takes a little while to get going.  In fact it is hard to find a caddis on the water before 10.   We have like the smaller chubbies for the caddis.   Also the loop wing caddis and X caddis have been really doing well.   Fish these along the bank, mid river bars anywhere less than 3 feet of water and the fish will come.  The small chubby will hold up a good sized dropper and the small chubby can also be a small stone fly, yellow sallie or other.   The chubby in size 14 with a dropper has been the searching rig of late.

Mayflies start some time around 11 and are quite effective.  We like the standard para adams or purple haze.   The tilt wing PMD has been a rock star this year so far.  Remember with all these scale down your tippet to 4X.  It needs to float free.

NYMPH

The nymph fishing has been strong as of late.  Princes, lightning bug, webby caddis stuff, the jiggy PMD looking stuff, along with micro rubber legs and the simple hares ear have all been leaving the fly shop in record speed.  It feels like get in the 16 size range and fish it you will find some fish.
