Dear Friends,

Spring is finally here! Those dark days of winter have come and gone and the season is quickly approaching. Although the high country is still getting snow, here in the valley it is dry and days are getting warmer (and longer). Spring fishing has kicked off in tremendous fashion with spawn hungry rainbows eager to eat anything that you put in front of them. With a few guide trips already in the book, it’s safe to say all of us here at The Tackle Shop are excited for another great season.

Following up on last months snow pack data, we are now sitting at 97% average for this time of year.  A 2% increase may not sound like much, but every little bit counts.  This will pay dividends come July and August (The dog days of summer). Snow Pack

In two weeks time we will be headed to Missoula, MT for the annual Orvis Guide Rendezvous.  The Skwala hatch should be in full swing, making for great dry fly action.  If you’re itching to get out and throw big dries to hungry trout, join us in Missoula for good fishing, good company and, of coarse, good beer.

Now I’d like to take this time to introduce another new face to our shop, Luke Lowery.  Luke will be our shop manager, overseeing day to day operations so that John can focus on guiding instead of playing superman.  Luke will be in the shop almost everyday so come by, say hello and shake his hand.  You will also be greeted by his 20 week old chocolate lab puppy named Mack.

Our coveted Spring Madison River Guide Trip Special is still in play and will be through the end of April. This is honestly one of the best times of the year to fish.  Brave the chilly mornings and come fishing with us for a unbelievable day on the Madison.

New Fly Shop Manager: Luke Lowery

I grew up just south of Denver, CO exploring every river within a few hundred miles of home.  I came to realize how much I enjoy teaching folks how to fish, so I became a guide.  I guided for four years in Fraser, CO while finishing up my business degree and playing baseball for Adams State University.  Fly fishing is my first passion, but business is a close second.  It only made sense to pursue a career in fly fishing where I could have a major impact in the business side of things.  The Tackle Shop had a job opening and after a couple interviews and a 24hr drive, here I am.  I couldn’t be happier with the position I am in, not to mention the beautiful country that I now get to call home.

Orvis Guide Rendezvous and Down the Hatch Fly fishing Festival April 7-9 Missoula, Mt

Our entire staff will again be attending the Orvis Guide Rendezvous and Down the Hatch Fly Fishing Festival in Missoula Mt this April.   The Rendezvous is three days of seminars on everything from marketing to guest service.  Each year we learn a few new things that make us better guides, shop employees and managers. Check out the itinerary for this years Rendezvous.Agenda  The afternoon of the third day is the Fly Fishing and Film Festival which is open to the public.  If you are in Missoula during this time swing by it is completely free and a bunch of fun with food, music, competitions and most importantly free beer and great fishing films

Spring Madison River Guide Trip Special

As you’ve heard, our spring special has become more and more popular; and for good reason.  This is truly one the best times of year to fish the Maddie.  Cold water, overcast skies, 0x tippet and hungry trout.  It seems as though every riffle, pocket and plunge pool has dozens of opportunistic trout that are more than willing to eat your offering.  If you don’t mind a little cold in the morning (weather warms up around noon) then come out and let us get you into some good fish for a great price.  At $350 you get a full day of guided fishing for two with a hot lunch, and save enough money to buy a pair of waders or that new rod you’ve had your eye on.  To sweeten the deal, pay full price for the trip ($485) and receive your choice of either Orvis Encounter or Redington Crosswater waders, FREE!  One pair of waders per boat booked at regular price.  Give us a call and book your trip today!

The clearwater is the perfect rod for the Maddie and most all western trout rivers.  Great price, easy on the wallet and heavily used by our guides.  The 6wt gives you more backbone when picking up and casting the large nymph rigs spring fishing has us using.

At the Take Out:

The light at the end of the tunnel is within casting distance!  Our Belize trip went as advertised and everyone returned home safely with damp clothing, sun burns and plans to go again next year.  The shop is filling up with new gear for the season and guides are filling up their calendars with trips.  Weather has been off and on this month with some days reaching as high as 60 degrees while other days are dropping down into the 30’s.  There seems to be a subtle buzz of activity in Ennis this time of year.  Everyone is preparing for the season, cherishing their favorite days of last and imagining this season being just as good.  Ennis starts to come alive this time of year.  Like everything else in nature, springs brings a new perspective, a new start, folks come out of hibernation and the town becomes whole again.  We’ve learned to love this time of year, you can’t help but put a big smile on your face walking through town.  Its definitely something you have to experience for yourself.  Anyways, we at The Tackle Shop hope everyone had a safe and healthy winter and we look forward to seeing the familiar faces we love to see every summer.  Any questions or anything you need help with, give us a call.  You know us, we love to help.

Good Fishing and God Bless
