Fishing Report for the Madison River in Montana 7-8-2019

Fishing Conditions

The Woo’s and Woe’s of the salmonfly hatch are almost over as the big bugs make their way towards Lyons bridge. Although fish were caught, the salmonfly hatch left many disappointed as the bugs were sparse and spread out with more eats coming on caddis than any of the big bugs . The fishing around town has been excellent. PMD and Caddis hatches have been consistent with a good number of yellow sallies and golden stones fluttering around. Fish are starting to consistently eat dries throughout the day. Dropping emergers off the back has been a proven successful method to get the more finicky fish to net. The best dry fly fishing has still been in the evenings and the best reports have come from those who have been willing to stay out till dark. As always fish will eat nymphs consistently throughout the day. Larger fish have been known to eat streamers during some of these consistent afternoon thunderstorms. Overall, now is a great time to be on the Madison with consistent flows and temperatures in the forecast. The diverse set of bugs in the water have the fish actively eating and not keying in on a single pattern. As always come see us in the shop for the most up to date reports and recommendations.
