Here we are the end of July and the first of August on the Madison and all is right. Most of the other rivers in our area are suffering from warm flows and hoot owl restrictions and the Madison keeps chugging right along. Want to fish dry’s yup that will work, streamer junkie chuck away, want to lob a bobber that will keep you bent as well. The dam being “fixed” and allowing water to come from the bottom of the lake has made a difference and is keeping the Madison in play while others are not. They did put a little more water in the river the other day and this will help the fish as well as the white painted rocks river wide.
Most guys fishing dry flies are throwing nocturnal stones along with purple may fly imitations and ants. Some guys are chucking hoppers but we feel the smaller hopper is just a nocturnal to the fish. Not sure what the fish are eating it for or thinking. Ants have been the big seller as of late. Spruce moths are a good choice around Lyons and Windy.
Bobber guys with prince variants and red copper johns have been keeping this bent. Streamer guys are dragging ups some nice fish with slinky sculpins with bead head trailers.
A little bit of everything for everyone going on. It is getting hot out there in the afternoons so plan an on early off early for best action and fisherman preservation. Ice cream in the afternoon is a good choice. A little bit of everything for everyone. Come on down and float some flies and catch more then just fish.
