The terrestrial fishing on the Upper Madison near Ennis has been the best we have seen in years. The water temperatures have been ranging between from the mid fifties to the mid sixties. While the river flows have been hovering around 1,260 CFS which is a little bit higher than norm for this time of year. These two factors may be what has lead to this great fishing. Wade Anglers have been having great luck fishing at Valley Garden and the Three Dollar Bridge access sites. Float Anglers have been enjoying great fishing through the float sections from Lyons Bridge to Ennis. The fish have been holding in all the like spots however there have been some big fish taken out of some skinny water. So don’t pass up those drop offs that are only a foot deep. The wildfires that are burning around the area have not affection the fishing and the winds have been favorable keeping the smoke away from the river.
We have been liking smaller chubbies, water walkers, and other floating hopper patterns with some floating trailer. Ants, moths, and caddis are the favorites.
Its really good out there right now despite the heat and as long as we maintain more normal temps we will keep the good fishing.
Dont forget the Ennis on the Madison Fly Fishing Festival Labor Day weekend. It is going to be a blast with speakers, music, booths, food, and fun for the entire family.
