We Aspire to Share Montana with Others
2017 Orvis Fly Fishing Outfitter of the Year
The Tackle Shop is South West Montana’s oldest fly shop, serving fly fisherman on the Madison River and all over Montana since 1937. We believe that all fishing should start with a healthy dose of fun. We feel there are no bad days with a fly rod in hand. We love the Madison River, Montana and inspire to show others. Our fly shop sits just a long cast away from the Madison River, near Yellowstone National Park and there are more Blue Ribbon Rivers within an hour drive of Ennis, than anywhere . On the Madison or any other Montana water, we thrive on educational fun fly fishing experiences with mature guides. Float, wade or walk our guide’s connect every guest with unforgettable experiences in breathtaking settings.
There are a bunch of great fly fishing guides in Montana and we feel our stable is full with some of the best. All of our guides are living the life they were drawn to, are Orvis Endorsed and are selected for their ability to inspire others, fun nature and fish catching ability. We believe that, we are not your average guide shop. We are not the biggest guide service in Montana or even our town and we never inspire to be. We believe in a single focus to have fun while sharing our connection with Montana and all we love with others.
John Way was born and raised in the Catskill Mountains on the banks of the fabled waters of the Delaware, Esopus and Beaverkill rivers. John dreamed of how he could make his mark on the vanishing American west and more specifically Montana and the Big Sky Country. In 1991 John found his opportunity, enrolling at the University of Montana where he received his degree in Wildlife Biology. While attending the University, John started his outfitting career guiding fishermen on the Blue Ribbon Rivers of Montana and working in local fly shops. Post graduation John turned his love into his livelihood.
From his early years of guiding John has taken outfitting to a new professional level. Over the past 20 yrs John has successfully managed Montana's largest and most diverse outfitting business, a South Dakota luxury high volume pheasant hunting lodge, and managed the outdoor recreational division of one of Montana's most exclusive private residence clubs. As a result, John's experience includes hundreds of pack trips into the Bob Marshall and Gros Ventre Wilderness Areas and Yellowstone National Park and thousands of fisherman days on Montana's trout streams and rivers. His expertise also includes habitat development, wildlife management, sporting clays course development and operations, managing three pheasant shooting preserves, food service, and lodging.

John currently lives in Ennis, Montana with his wife and three dogs, where he manages The Tackle Shop and his consulting and outfitting company, The Montana Way Outfitters and Consulting. John is the current President of the Ennis Montana Chamber of Commerce. He was recently appointed by the Montana Governor to sit on the Montana Board of Outfitters as the chairman. John also sits on the Board of Directors of the Pole Star Alliance Project fulfilling his other passion of using the great outdoors to bring people closer to Christ. In his spare time you will find him living the life of his dreams, eternally searching for the perfect drift, flush or bugle.
Justin Capps--Fly Shop Manager
Justin hails from Pennsylvania and has a lifetime of experience in the fly fishing world. He is a Montana Outfitter and was the Outfitter of Record for a high end guest ranch resort in the Blackfoot Valley before we hired him away. With almost 10 years of guiding experience he has a handle on what makes a great guide and guide trip. He is an avid fisherman and hunter and is in charge of everything in the store. He is the boss during the summer guide season. The best part about Justin is his nature and personality. He can talk to anyone and makes everyone feel comfortable. In his spare time you will find him on the river most likely chasing a steelhead in cold wet conditions.
Kayla grew up in Portland Oregon and has a degree from the University of Montana. She is the brains and the behind the scenes person in the store. She does everything from helping with the billing, reservation, shopping, product selection and making all those tasty guide lunches. Besides being married to John and cleaning up all his messes, which is a full time job she manages to spend time keeping the shop in order. In her spare time away from the store she has a real job as the Executive Director of the Continuing Education Program for Ennis. The shop would not run without her.
