Dear Friends,

April has always been a temperamental month in regards to the weather.  Some days are reaching 70 degrees while others are barely over 30 with snow blowing sideways.  The warmer weather has pushed more water into the Madison, but she still remains clear.  The fishing has been fantastic with many large browns and rainbows to the net.  The rainbow spawn is nearing its end, fish will still eat eggs, but they are starting to turn onto to real bugs now.
We’ve been getting a lot of calls and questions about the runoff lately.  The timing and severity of runoff is anyone’s guess but a few things to look for are obviously warmer days but the night time temperature is something to look for as well.  If the nighttime temps are 50+ degrees there is a solid chance the river will gain some color.  Recent rains have also pushed some sediment in the river but no matter the clarity we are still picking up fish everyday.
In April the entire staff attended the Orvis Guide Rendezvous so if you saw that we were closed for a few days that was the reason why.  Like always, the OGR was a huge success.  We all learned a lot, met some great people and thoroughly enjoyed the free beer.  Thank you Orvis and Big Sky Brewing!  The folks at Orvis host a truly wonderful event and if you’ve never been to a rendezvous, we highly recommend going.  Fortunately, it was about 80 degrees everyday and we finally got to break out the flip flops and guide shorts and enjoy the beautiful weather outside.  Unfortunately for some, being that it was 80 degrees, the rivers up there got blown out and trips had to be moved to the Missouri.  Such a bummer that we had to fish the Missouri.  All joking aside, it was a great trip and we have made it our goal to be in the running for the outfitter and shop of the year awards for the years to come.
May is approaching and that usually marks the start of our busy season.   If you haven’t taken advantage of our spring special trip, you have a couple weeks left to do so.  With the fishing being as awesome as it is, give us a call and book your trip before time runs out.  Its truly a great value.

New Shop Dog: The Mack Attack
Mack
If you’ve been by the shop in the past month, you were more than likely greeted by Mack.  Mack is Lukes 6-month old chocolate lab and he loves people; Sometimes a little too much.  Mack has become quite the fishing dog but he really likes to chase indicator rigs.  He has met several moose that he still thinks are friends, but we have had a heart to heart conversation about his friend choices so hopefully he will stay away from the wrong crowd.  Mack and Gracie (Johns youngest lab) are very close and some days you’ll find them snuggling together on the back porch.  Luke will be in the shop most days so if you haven’t met Mack, stop by and say hello.

Summer Guided Fishing

The majority of our guides are getting restless, heading back to town and are ready to get the busy season underway.  Your favorite guides schedules are starting to fill up so if you are looking for a specific guide, on a specific day on a specific river now is the time to give us a call. It is true that we can always accommodate you and pride ourselves on providing great trips for our last minute customers but if spending a day with your favorite Tackle Shop guide is on your agenda we should talk soon.  Give us a call at the store and we can get some dates in the guide books.

Great Gear for Spring Fishing

$425.00
Orvis Recon 10′ 4wt
Summer is approaching, meaning the dry fly fishing on the Maddie is about to go off.  The 10′ 4wt Recon is the perfect dry fly rod for any angler.  The added length will have the power of a 5wt with the subtleness and presentability of a 4wt.  The added length helps anglers get their fly farther than a standard 9′ rod.  This pays dividends when the fish are spooky and you have to be stealthy.

$249.00
 Costa Sun Glasses

The fish are transitioning out of their winter holdings and are started to spread out across the river.  That, paired with the beautiful blue bird days, eye wear becomes a vital part of success on the Madison.  Costa makes a great pair of glasses at a reasonable price. They are our guides favorite and a must have on the water.  Get yourself a pair and find the fish before they find you.

At the Take Out:

May 1st marks the start of the busy season but with the great weather we are having our season has already started out with a bang.  We are running multiple trips every week and calls keep pouring in for more.  The remainder of the staff should be showing up any day now and we are all very excited for the coming season.  This winter/early spring brought a bunch of moisture to the valley and everything is starting to turn green.  The dullness of winter has waved its goodbye and the valley is starting to regain its form.  Not only is mother nature returning to its summer form, the town of Ennis is as well.  Everyone is out and about, planting flowers, taking a stroll down main street and preparing themselves for the summer season.  There is a new energy in town and along with mother nature becoming more vibrant, the people of Ennis have a glowing hue about them.  Unlike major metropolitan areas, the town of Ennis and mother nature have a close relationship.  We hope all of you are as as excited for the season as we are and like always, any questions or if you need any help please give us a call.  We’re here for you.
Good Fishing and God Bless,
